The game has a variety of difficulty levels – ranging from heroic mode (the default, intended way to play), to adventure mode (for beginners of the rogue-like genre), to hardcore mode (for those who want the ultimate challenge). Along the way, you’ll also come across side areas, portals to other dimensions, and even encounter boss monsters. The game itself is predominantly a dungeon crawler, and sees you take on the role of Mirai – a young girl who wishes to learn more about the world beyond her own, known as Tangledeep.Īs you begin your journey, you progressively make your way through a randomly-generated dungeon, comprised of 20 levels. Tangledeep was my first introduction to the rogue-like genre, and has since made me a big fan. Each character has their own personality and, while there are some cliché moments, they all feel genuine and likeable in their own way. Throughout the story, there are many twists and turns, and I was surprised at how well-written it was. The main story follows Lita, Adrian, Seri, and Doren, as they join forces to save the world of Ara Fell from certain destruction. The game rewards the player for exploring the world, and taking the time to learn about all of its inhabitants. Stegosoft Games is an independent video game studio that focuses on 16-bit era RPGs, and after having played Ara Fell, I could definitely tell that there is a deep love and passion for this genre.Īs for the game itself, Ara Fell may seem like your typical JRPG and, in some cases, it is, but it is also deceptively complex. This was their first release, so it’s nice to see that the developer took the time to modernize the game for new audiences. Initially released in 2016, Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition is an upgraded version of Ara Fell, which was developed by Stegosoft Games. Having said that, if you are looking to try something new, I’ll be going over 3 games that deserve some more love. If you aren’t really interested in these genres, be sure to check out the Discovery Queue on Steam for yourself – there is something for everyone! I tend to play a lot of games within the RPG, action-adventure, and life sim genres. The queue will recommend new, top-selling, and similar games, based on what you play and use on Steam. Thankfully, there is a powerful feature on Steam called the ‘Discovery Queue’, which allows you to discover potential new games to play. This includes a lack of marketing budget, or simply being released at the wrong time, which is quite common in today’s competitive gaming industry.
#Hidden gems on steam 2017 full#
There are many reasons why a game won’t reach its full potential. For all intents and purposes, I have classified these ‘hidden gems’ as any game that has under 2000 reviews on Steam, which is currently my main gaming platform. Over the years, I have picked up a few games that have flown under the radar, in terms of popularity. Sound familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Funnily enough, I will occasionally think to myself, “Damn, I have nothing to play…” As of 2021, there are over 50, 000 games on Steam.
